Sitting on Sri Lanka’s northeast coast, Trincomalee is a quiet town with a remarkable history and a wealth of attractions. Whether you want to immerse yourself in the diverse culture of Sri Lanka or relax at the beach, Trincomalee has you covered. So, here’s how you can have an extraordinary tourist experience in the town of Trincomalee.

Fort Frederick

One of the important historical sites in Sri Lanka, Fort Fredrick, invites history buffs from all around the world. A Portuguese creation, Fort Fedrick harks back to the colonial era of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. The magnificent entrance is one of the main highlights, and groups of roaming deer add to the already charming character of the Fort. Another reason to visit this historical highlight is the sweeping views it offers.
The fort can be visited from 6 AM to 10 PM.

Koneswaram Temple

If you have time only for one attraction in Trincomalee, you should use that time to visit Koneswaram Temple. This is one of the most significant religious places in all of the country. Dedicated to Shiva, a Hindu deity, the temple is found inside Fort Fedrick at the top of a hill. Apart from spiritual vibes, the temple also offers gorgeous vistas of the Indian Ocean.

Velgam Vehera

If you want to enjoy some quiet time in the characteristic religious splendour of Sri Lanka, you should visit Velgam Vehera. This is an old Buddhist site where you can still see the remains of Sri Lanka’s glorious past. The site sits at the heart of a jungle, and the crystalline Buddha that stands in the middle is one of the main features.
One of the highlights is the new monastery that stands in contrast to the ancient ruins. Walking among tall trees and patches of grass is sure to be a relaxing experience.

Maritime and Naval History Museum

To learn about Sri Lanka’s maritime history, visit the Maritime and Naval History Museum found inside a Dutch-style house built in the 17th century. The ground floor is filled with treasures going back to a time when Marco Polo roamed the world. And the first floor contains a wealth of exhibits that will give you insight into Sri Lanka’s marine diversity. The entrance is free, and there are guides who will walk you through everything. What’s more, the museum offers gorgeous views of the bay.

Beaches

As Truly Sri Lanka would point out, beaches are an essential part of touring Sri Lanka. So, wander towards the north to find two beautiful beaches dotted with palm trees, namely Nilaveli and Uppuveli Beaches.
Uppuveli redefines the idea of beach holidays with its soft white sand, blue waters of the ocean, and small restaurants offering delicious Sri Lankan food. The beach has a laid-back vibe that’s perfect for relaxing and swimming.
Nilaveli Beach, on the other hand, is much bigger and calmer and untouched by commercial activities prompted by tourism. This is an excellent place to unwind.

Pigeon Island National Park

For a respite from the daily cares of your everyday life and to get a feel of the unspoilt coastal beauty of Sri Lanka, visit Pigeon Island National Park. The park is located off Nilaveli Beach and comprises two small islands. With beautiful rock formations and thriving marine life, the park provides shelter for endangered rock pigeons. Stunning rock pools, shallow waters, and soft white sand make this a perfect paradise. Visitors can also enjoy some snorkelling right off the beach.

Trincomalee War Cemetery

Among the six commonwealth war cemeteries is Trincomalee War Cemetery. Found inside a beautiful and well-maintained garden, Trincomalee War Cemetery is where the fallen soldiers of World War II rest. The cemetery has a sombre and solemn atmosphere.
