The city has historical, cultural, and religious significance. Galle is also a reminder of the country’s colonial past. The city has many highlights, and Galle Fort is at the top of the list. Best time to visit

For a glimpse of the country’s maritime history, visit the Maritime Archaeology Museum. Inside the museum is a valuable collection of historical items, including model ships and items sourced from shipwrecks. A tsunami in 2004 damaged the museum, but with donations, the museum was restored. Artilleries and maps are some of the other prized items in the collection. If you have time for one more museum, you should visit the Historical Mansion Museum as well.
Marvel at the Japanese Peace Pagoda
Also called Unawatuna Peace Pagoda, the Japanese Peace Pagoda is an absolute must-visit. Located close to Unawatuna Beach, the pagoda features a massive white dome and is found amidst a verdant forest. Architecture and the statues of Buddha are the main highlights, but the site will also bring you amazing views of the area. For lesser crowds, visit in the afternoon, but for the best views, visit in the morning or evening.
Visit Dutch Reformed Church
Located inside Galle Fort, Dutch Reformed Church should be part of your itinerary. The building has a history that can be traced back to the 18th century. While you are here, don’t forget to have a chat with the caretaker; he will have so many fascinating stories to tell you.
